Educational Huki -Open to the Public

Join us for a volunteer workday in Maunalua Bay with the Kapi’olani Community College Ecology Labs! We will help restore the marine environment by removing invasive algae from the nearshore waters, as part of an effort to continue the work of the Great Huki. From 2009-2011, a team of dedicated volunteers and staff removed 3 million pounds of invasive limu from 26 acres. Today, we continue this effort through volunteer workdays with schools and community groups.
Event Details: Please meet at Paiko Beach Access (adjacent to 210 Paiko Drive) at 2:00 pm. The event will run for approximately 3 hours. Parking can found along Paiko Drive. Upon arrival check in with the Community Huki Leaders (CHLs). They will hand out water shoes, gloves, and bags to remove the algae. Please ensure that you have adequate amounts of water & sunscreen, and clothing that can get wet, such as rash guards, t-shirts board shorts, towels, etc. We recommend using the restrooms at Kuliʻouʻou Beach park as there are none at the worksite. Once all of the Huki supplies are handed out, the CHLs will give an introduction about Mālama Maunalua, the history of Maunalua Bay, and the types of invasive alien algae being removed that day. This is in participation with an ongoing research project with the Kapi’olani Community College Ecology Labs. The remainder of the time will be spent removing invasive algae from the bay.
